Note Bene — The DSJ for this date is garbled with respect to the grenade incidents that occurred overnight. It does record (0445 - 0515 hrs.) that an unidentified Second Platoon element was located at 887103 at this time, which contradicts the 888107 of the previous DSJ (3 Nov.). These events can be reconstructed from the account of Flanders (Richard E. Flanders, Lord, Send an Earthquake! [Bloomington, IN: Xlibris, 2003] 133-135) who was with the 25 element that night, also on ambush. I too recall this incident. The 23 element was presumably located as indicated in the DSJ. "We in the first and second squads [forming the 25 element] were to proceed farther to set up another ambush position at a different location. ... we walked another thousand meters where the rice field ended and the cane field began. There the dykes formed an intersection in the open field." (p. 133) Their position coincides with 892094, 1 klt. farther on and at the intersection of two dykes, rather than the 888099 cited in the previous DSJ (3 Nov.). What the DSJ does not mention is that the new Sergeant in charge of the 23 element, "... said he saw one of the new guys stand up in the dark and he thought a gook had slipped up on him. It scared him, so he threw a grenade and started firing." (p. 135) All three men killed (Robert Allen Albertson [29E, 18],  Jimmy Ray Baggarly, [29E, 18], David Mack Herendon [29E, 19]) were new to the field. That this was not explicated in the DSJs subsequently is no doubt due to the embarrassment of having such a friendly fire incident.
